9 Reasons Why You Should Be A Taxi Driver

By motd | Dec 16, 2007

Instead of slogging in front of my laptop working hard under a boss who does not appreciate my long hours maybe I should just switch job and be a taxi driver. After the taxi price hike, being a taxi driver just became so attractive. I will give you 9 reasons why you should quit your current job and become a taxi driver.

1. You get to choose who to pick up.

2. You determine how long is your lunch break/coffee break/toilet break.

3. You can charge “extra surcharge” to foreigners who just arrived in Singapore.

4. You get to drive like a madman on the road.

5. You can disappear and magically reappear after the surcharges kick in.

6. You can put the on call sign and wait for passengers to dial a taxi right in front of the taxi stand.

7. The Taxi Operators’ Associations will fight for my right to increase the fares.

8. You get to rebate on Electronic Road Pricing for entering the city if you can’t land a passenger within 15 minutes of entering an ERP zone.

9. You get to have subsidise diesel from the Taxi Operator.

With all this incentives, it sure makes driving a taxi much more attractive than staying in the office to face that unappreciative boss. Don’t you think?

Why be taxi driver when you are better off being a taxi rental company?

Yes taxi rental company will be the holy grail! Maybe be a member in PTC is not bad too. Make easy decision and pass the bucks around.

Hey I thought of that but starting a taxi rental company requires a lot of $$ which I seriously lack of at the moment.

Pt 7. The Taxi Operators’ Associations will fight for my right to increase the fares.

This I like. In fact, there’s no other association which will fight for whoever they _claimed_ to represent to increase ‘wages’ when living costs turn against them. I don’t see my union fighting for my right to have a big payrise, when fares have increases, my electricity bill has increased, GST has increased etc etc.

The lame excuse to raise fares because fuel costs has gone up and life is more difficult for cabbies rings hollow.

Everyone is affected by the increase. Instead of banding together we are just stabbing each other behind our own backs.

Some reasons why I don’t fancy being a taxi driver…

    1. Taxi rental fees are raised too, and passengers don’t know. The true earners are not the cabbies but the taxi companies.

    2. Only selected petrol stations offer subsidized diesel. Given the journey to and fro the petrol station, the savings from there are as good as null. Some cabbies rather forgo the discount and top up somewhere near.

    3. Cabbies still pay rental on their off days. Office staffs don’t get their salary deducted because of weekend rest. They don’t get standard 14 days annual/sick leave too, unlike most office staffs.

    4. Environment friendly cabs can only top up in Jurong Islands. Rental is higher than the average cabs too.
