Just as we thought that the last chapter of the Odex Saga had been written, they were back in court. This time, behind closed doors so that the public wouldn’t know what was going on before it hit them by surprise.
2 months ago, Mr Sing, director of Odex posted on Odex forum that they would not be taking action against the group of Pacific Internet downloaders. Looking back at it now, it seems that Mr Sing was just doing some PR to let the anime community lower their guard before the final strike at the last ISP still standing on their way. It was never Odex’s intention to let go anyone unpunished for downloading the anime illegally.
This time round, Odex had roped in the help of various copyright owner of the anime titles to fight the battle for them since District Judge Earnest Lau ruled that Odex was just a sub-Licensee for the anime. Odex had applied to join the copyright owners as parties if the court decided that Odex was not the correct party to make the application to take legal actions for pre action discovery against Pacific Internet.
Did all this turn about events made Odex Director, Mr Sing the Biggest Liar in the Singapore? First they tried to play down the situation by claiming that Odex would not be taking action against Pacific Internet downloaders. On the other hand, they got the copyright owners all the way down from Japan to file a court order in Singapore to force Pacific Internet into releasing the names. After which Odex applied to join the parties so they could take legal actions against Pacific Internet downloaders together.
With all their lies, no wonder their company site was hacked. It was still down when this entry was being written. Found this interesting video over at SGfrag.net to share with you.

Technically, Odex is not the party taking action but the filing of court order is done by the copyright owners. According to the law, copyright owners have every right to do that. There’s nothing wrong with it at all.
In comparison, don’t downloaders have a hidden agenda of their own too? Like downloading free and illegally? There’s always both sides of the story, unless downloaders can prove what they are doing are not illegal.
