Starting from today onwards, all major shops and supermarkets will stop handing out plastic bags for groceries. You want to shop for groceries, buy a recycle bag for a dollar or you can just bring your own. This tough move to go green and cut down pollution would sure raise the protest of many people. After all, plastic bags had become a necessity in our daily life. Nah this is not going to happen in Singapore. At least not yet.
But this is happening for ParknShop in Hong Kong. The supermarket is ditching its policy of dishing out plastic bags. The first supermarket to go green. Biodegradable plastic bags would be offered to shoppers instead. By doing so, the supermarket chain will avoid dumping 50 million plastic bags into shrinking landfills in 2008.
What do we do with the plastic bags that we got from the supermarkets etc? Did we actually recycle them or just throw them away? My guess is that most are being thrown away after use. Recycling is still not in our dictionary as yet.
In Singapore, first Wednesday of the month is the Bring Your Own Bag day but did it actually worked? I have no idea. My mum would rather skip shopping that day so as not to bring her own bag. As DK put it on his blog “Bring your own bag 3 - 24 Never bring your own bag” We still need lots of work in educating the public in this Recycling Area.

hmm. i hope this will happen soon in sg.
